Azeroth at the table: WoW’s D&D adaptation gives your main a new life
WoW classes, professions and factions come to D&D. Explore how a familiar character can become the hero of your own group’s adventure.
What if the door on your next Azeroth expedition could be opened in a way its quest designer had never anticipated? At a tabletop, a familiar world becomes a place for shared storytelling. You can persuade the guard, ask an enemy an unexpected question, or let a personal failure change the direction of the entire evening.
D&D: World of Warcraft releases on November 17, 2026, with D&D Beyond Master Tier early access beginning November 3. Built on the Player’s Handbook, the expansion includes adaptations of seven dungeons. This means playing D&D in Warcraft’s world; knowing WoW classes does not replace learning the tabletop rules. The publisher’s overview.
October’s class and profession previews make the idea more concrete. The interesting part goes beyond transferring a main to paper: what can a familiar character do when their actions are no longer limited to buttons on a screen?
Your main may use an unexpected rulebook class
The official class preview covers 13 WoW classes, 40 specializations and nine new or reimagined subclasses. That does not mean thirteen entirely new D&D base classes. Death Knight uses Paladin, Demon Hunter uses Ranger, and Shaman uses Barbarian as its foundation. D&D Beyond’s October 6 class preview.
| WoW character | D&D foundation | Featured subclass |
|---|---|---|
| Death Knight | Paladin | Oath of the Ebon Blade |
| Demon Hunter | Ranger | Demon Hunter |
| Shaman (Elemental) | Barbarian | Path of the Elements |
Those mappings show the adaptation looking for a suitable mechanical framework. Players can begin with personality: what makes your particular shaman interesting? Are they a community adviser, a restless traveller, or someone struggling to accept their own power? Rules choices can support the answer, but cannot write the character on their own.
Party roles also become a conversation. Someone who enjoys tanking may want to protect friends during negotiations. A healer might be the first person to notice that the opposition does not really want to fight. Decisions made at the table can give a familiar role another dimension.

A profession can start an entire adventure
The October 8 preview introduces gathering and production professions, alongside more than twenty factions and renown relationships. Gathering materials, using tools and crafting connect a character with life outside combat. The publisher’s professions and factions preview.
That readily suggests a session premise. The following is our own example for a Dungeon Master, rather than a published adventure: a village blacksmith needs ore to repair a bridge, but the merchant carrying the shipment has disappeared. The party might recover the supplies, investigate the merchant’s debts or find another way to build the bridge. Each choice says something about the characters’ values.
The example works because of its modest scale. Players affect somewhere they can revisit. Completing the bridge changes village life, and the blacksmith may remember the party later. A profession gains narrative meaning when it creates relationships as well as objects.

Agree on Azeroth before rolling the first die
Warcraft knowledge can be a strength at the table and a source of disagreement. One person wants to revisit familiar events, another wants to change them, and a third knows the world only through friends. A short opening conversation saves considerable explanation later.
Agree on the era, the party’s reason for working together, and how closely the campaign will follow familiar history. If Horde and Alliance characters share the group, give them a reason to cooperate that every player wants to support. Nobody needs to win a debate about the correct interpretation of Warcraft before the adventure can begin.
For readers interested in Forever, this also provides an opportunity to choose a particular emphasis. A campaign can pursue the atmosphere of local communities, long journeys and small mysteries. The D&D product should not, however, be treated as evidence of Forever’s future story: this is a separate game and adaptation.
Watch Azeroth around a gaming table
The official Dungeon Masters Warcraft campaign follows a Horde guild called Afterlife into Northrend, with Jasmine Bhullar as Dungeon Master. The publisher has also introduced a free Play Along Pack, which requires a D&D Beyond account to claim. Campaign and sample-pack introduction.

The trailer offers a taste of the presentation. Your own group does not need to perform in the same way. An understandable problem, a few interesting people and permission to experiment are enough for a first evening. Knowing Azeroth helps everyone imagine the setting. The shared game begins with what you decide to do there.
