Azeroth’s second chance · the big World of Warcraft: Forever feature

What happens when WoW’s old world gets a new future? An in-depth look at Forever’s beta, zones, dungeons, character progression and unanswered questions.

Do you remember the road out of your first starting zone? You did not yet know how far away the next town was. Your bags were too small, a nearby enemy looked suspiciously dangerous, and the tower on the horizon might have been more interesting than the quest you were supposed to be doing.

World of Warcraft: Forever’s biggest promise is not a new set of equipment. It is the possibility of taking that journey again without knowing the answer to every turn in the road. Familiarity can bring you back. Familiarity alone cannot keep you there.

The beta is now live. This feature follows the journey from a first test session into the new Azeroth, character progression and future raids. It is not our hands-on review or a verdict on the finished game: we are examining the announced design using published sources. Information was checked on September 18, 2026.

First things first: what is Forever?

Blizzard presents Forever as a permanent game alongside modern and Classic WoW. Its starting point is the original continents and the journey to level 60, with new content built around them. The setting follows Forsaken Kingdom and precedes Molten Core. Blizzard’s announcement roundup.

Classic+ is an understandable comparison, but a poor instruction manual. For one player, it means the old game with a few new dungeons. For another, it means fixing almost every old frustration. More useful questions are what Forever keeps, what it changes, and which costs it asks players to accept in time or effort.

To us, the most interesting possibility is familiarity mixed with uncertainty. Leave everything untouched and a veteran knows the answer before the question. Change everything and the reason to return to this particular world disappears. Success lies somewhere in that narrow gap where you recognise a place but have to look at it again.

That is why we would not frame this as a contest between retail and Classic. A worthwhile alternative can serve a different kind of evening. Sometimes you want to practise a difficult encounter against the clock. Sometimes you want to set out with a friend without knowing exactly how the trip will end.

The beta is open: what can you actually play?

The opening announcement sets the first week’s cap at level 20. It includes Skyborne and Zephras Isle, Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, and zone content through level 20. The cap will later rise to 30. An open Server Slam lasting several hours is also planned, without a date yet. Testing runs through October 21. Official beta announcement.

That establishes an important boundary: an open beta does not mean every advertised launch feature is ready to test. One evening cannot settle endgame gearing or raid difficulty. Equally, the opening levels are not disposable. If the journey is the point, those first stretches have to stand up on their own.

For a first session, we would choose one class, one proper evening and one question: do I want to come back to this character tomorrow? Trying to compare everything immediately can obscure that answer. Combat rhythm, bag space, travel and encounters with other players together say more than a single impressive damage number.

If you are playing with friends, agree whether you are staying together or exploring at your own pace. Otherwise, the first social problem might simply be that one person is reading quests while another is already waiting outside a dungeon.

A new world between the edges of the old map

Blizzard’s Found Photos panel places Forever in its own time bubble. Riverglades, Mount Hyjal and Zephras Isle offer different ways to expand that setting: an overlooked space between familiar borders, a long-awaited destination, and a new people’s home. Riverglades is described as having nearly 200 quests. Found Photos panel recap.

The idea works best when a new zone does not feel like a separate attraction. You notice a road continuing from somewhere familiar, or a harbour with a meaningful connection to the rest of the world. Getting there becomes part of the experience. A door does not simply appear in a menu.

The official Riverglades image offers an appealing glimpse of that possibility. Your eye follows the water, the buildings and the tower in the distance. It proves nothing about quest quality, but it gives the imagination something to work with. What happens there? Who built it? How do you reach it?

A large MMO needs those questions even when you are not pursuing your next raid slot. If the world only functions as a more efficient route to maximum level, much of its potential goes unused. We would like places you visit because you are curious, not just because a guide sends you there.

Skyborne and Forsaken paladins need more than a new appearance

Skyborne history connects rebels from Eldre’Thalas with Skywall. Zephras’ present crisis involves failing structures and missing protectors. There is a story premise here beyond a new character-creation appearance. Blizzard’s world and story presentation.

For Forsaken paladins, Warcraft III: Reforged’s Forsaken Kingdom provides background. Blizzard identifies Garek Bandarion and Dark Ranger Anya as central characters and connects the campaign to Forever’s era. Forsaken Kingdom panel recap.

In our view, choices like these succeed through play. An unusual race-and-class combination is easy to announce and harder to make convincing. The surroundings, quests and reactions of other characters need to give it a place in the world. A web-page explanation cannot replace the feeling that your character belongs there.

New players should not need to study a complete chronology before starting, either. A good opening story works without prior knowledge. Veterans can have an extra layer of recognition, but the first layer should make sense on its own.

Character choices matter more than a premature tier list

Class and talent changes have been announced, but we are not using them to rank the best launch classes. The official What’s Next recap describes preserving class identity while adding options to their toolkits.

That is more interesting than counting new action-bar buttons. Does a class have a clear purpose? Does a missing tool feel like an intentional weakness or an unnecessary obstacle? Does a talent change what you do, or merely the number at the end of a calculation?

During beta, we would also test situations where the plan goes wrong. What happens when another enemy joins the fight? Can you help a friend? Is retreat a realistic option? A class often reveals more about itself in a difficult small encounter than in an ideal damage test.

You can sketch possibilities using our Forever class pages and talent calculators. Treat them as planning tools, not guarantees of final balance. Beta is precisely the stage when something that looks settled can still change.

Campfires and Legacy: reasons to pause and begin again

A character stands beside a tent and a burning campfire in a dark woodland.

The Deep Dive describes three crafted objects per basic camp, one per player, and more than 600 profession recipes. Legacy allows 16 points to be spent at launch, with 65 available to earn. Earning and spending limits are different. Blizzard’s systems recap.

A camp sounds modest, but shared spaces do not always need competition or a reward screen. A natural pause can create a moment in which you notice another player before moving on. Turn every stop into a compulsory efficiency ritual, however, and the same system could have the opposite effect.

What we would want most is a good rhythm. An adventure should allow room to breathe without making the pause feel wasteful. A game cannot order people to have a conversation. It can leave enough space for one to happen.

Legacy poses a different question: when is a new character a fresh adventure, and when is it an obligation to benefit your main? A spending cap is an interesting starting point, but the lived experience matters. A system can invite experimentation or leave you worrying about what you should complete first.

Our test would be simple: can someone who loves one character enjoy the game as much as someone building an army of alts? Both approaches should feel like choices, not mistakes. The answer depends on how goals fit into an ordinary evening, not just the maximum number on a progression screen.

Playing together starts before the dungeon entrance

Forever’s realmless structure is not an unlimited shared grouping pool. Matching rulesets and faction still matter. Deep Dive recap. Our group-finding feature looks more closely at that direction and the developer interview behind it.

There is real potential here, along with a real risk of friction. Memorable groups often form because people have to accommodate one another a little. That does not mean every minute spent waiting is a valuable social experience.

For a regular group, agree on a way of playing rather than merely a launch date. Will you read quests? Wait for the slowest member? Allow people to progress alone? When will you find a replacement for someone who cannot make it? These mundane questions often matter more than a perfect class composition.

For someone playing irregularly, the test is different: can I find company when I only have a short evening available? Social design works when a newcomer can join in. A closed circle of old friends is not enough to keep an entire world welcoming.

Nine new dungeons along the road

The dungeon list already demonstrates why announcements need follow-up checks. Blizzard corrected Krol’dok Stronghold’s level range to 40–45, replacing a wider range shown in earlier material. These are the nine ranges published by Kaivax. Official clarification and dungeon list.

  • The Hall of Thanes · 13–18
  • Ruins of Lordaeron · 15–20
  • Excavation Site: Wetlands · 24–29
  • City of Dalaran · 28–33
  • The Drowned City · 35–40
  • Krol’dok Stronghold · 40–45
  • Alcaz Prison · 48–53
  • Blackmaw Hold · 55–60
  • Shaper’s Terrace · 58–60

These are announced target ranges, not entry requirements tested by us. Nor does this list mean all nine are available during the opening beta week.

Their distribution across the journey is the appealing part. New group content does not have to wait until maximum level. A first successful dungeon can give a character direction and a party a reason to arrange another evening together.

We are not publishing invented boss tactics for them. A useful guide needs to explain what actually happens: what to interrupt, where to move, and which mistakes can wipe the group. A name and an atmospheric image cannot supply those answers. For now, this list helps plan the journey rather than solve it in advance.

Raids and the future: leave room for uncertainty

Barrow Deeps is planned for ten players and Hyjal Summit for twenty. The roadmap lists December 9, 2026 for new raids. Hardcore and other additions follow later; not everything has a firm date. Official content roadmap.

For a guild, sensible preparation does not yet require a permanently fixed roster. Schedules and interests often become clear during the journey. Beta class choices may change, and a newcomer may discover an unexpected favourite role.

There is value in giving a group time to develop a shared history before its first raid. Who rescued a bad pull? Whose profession helped everyone else? Who found the entertaining quest chain? A raid place can mean something different when the team is more than a checklist of required jobs.

At the same time, resist the temptation to fill every blank in the roadmap with a wish. A stated direction is not a release calendar locked in for years. If an old favourite raid is not named in the source, its return should not be treated as confirmed.

What does it cost, and how do you get beta access?

The base game is included with an active WoW subscription or game time. Upgrade packs are separate: the Skyborne Heroic Pack includes Skyborne access, while the Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection also include beta access. Launch is announced for November 4 at 3 p.m. PST, equivalent to November 5, 2026 at 01:00 in Finland. Blizzard’s upgrade terms.

Invitations are also available through opt-in selection, which does not guarantee access. Eligible digital purchases can take up to around 30 minutes to activate, and may require restarting the launcher. Official beta instructions.

For the physical Collector’s Edition, beta-code redemption instructions arrive by email. That is a different process from buying a digital bundle alone. Collector’s Edition instructions.

Our advice is to separate three reasons to buy: playing at launch, specifically wanting the new race, and testing before release. Do not pay for a larger bundle because you mistake it for everybody’s required entry ticket. Do not confuse launch-week friend codes with beta invitations, either.

We cover the earlier interview statement about Tokens and level boosts in a separate report. Distinguishing a current plan from an eternal promise matters there just as much as reading the details of a paid package.

Old Azeroth does not mean old hardware requirements

Blizzard’s September 17 GPU notice sets an architectural support floor at AMD GCN 1, NVIDIA Maxwell, Intel Skylake or newer. Technical compatibility is not the same as meeting minimum requirements: Blizzard explicitly says some compatible example cards remain below those requirements. Official GPU notice.

Do not turn that into a shopping list based on a model number alone. Identify your actual GPU first, then compare the whole computer against current requirements. On a laptop, also check which graphics processor the game is using.

We would test performance somewhere quiet and somewhere crowded. One beautiful view cannot tell you how the game behaves around other players. Keep visual quality and responsiveness as separate observations: a lovely screenshot is little consolation if playing feels uneven.

This article contains no hardware benchmark of our own. We are therefore not promising a frame rate or recommending a purchase on the strength of a single beta observation.

Read the known issues before drawing conclusions

Kaivax’s September 17 list includes barber-chair Lua errors, disabled character-friend functionality, incorrect character-panel information and Glancing Blow calculation problems. Opening Legacy too early can also cause errors. Some fixes are listed for the next beta build, not as already delivered. Official beta known issues.

This particularly matters in class discussions. If the interface displays the wrong information or a known bug changes a calculation, a screenshot alone does not establish final balance. Record the observation, but check whether the problem has already been identified before drawing a broad conclusion.

A useful bug report is often short. Include class and level, location, the action taken, what you expected, and what happened. Say whether it repeats. Remove private conversations and account information from screenshots. A developer needs a reproducible situation, not a more persuasive expression of anger.

Equally, calling something a beta does not make your opinion irrelevant. If a system feels awkward while working as intended, that is different feedback from a technical defect. Both can be useful when they are clearly separated.

What should we watch next?

Blizzard’s September 17 developer Q&A can be watched through its official news post. We include the recording as further viewing, but are not turning summaries circulating on forums into new confirmations without checking the relevant passage in the original broadcast. Official Q&A recording.

For us, the next major questions are not a feature checklist:

  • Will the world remain interesting on another character? Novelty helps the first time, but a repeat journey needs reasons of its own.
  • Can a new player find a place in the community? Returning friendships are wonderful; newcomers still need a way in without an existing network.
  • Does a character choice feel personal? Balance need not make everyone identical, but an alternative should not feel like a trap.
  • Is the slower pace meaningful? An interesting journey and empty waiting are not the same thing.
  • How does feedback become change? Testing becomes more valuable when players can see what was fixed and why.

These are our editorial questions, not claims of successes or failures we have already witnessed. We will return to them as more verifiable evidence becomes available.

A second chance is not a second youth

Forever cannot restore the circumstances in which you played your first WoW character. We know more, encounter fewer surprises, and often have less time. Expecting precisely the same feeling asks for something no update can guarantee.

It can still offer something valuable: a familiar world you do not yet know completely. A place where a newcomer takes a first journey and a veteran has to forget the established route for a moment.

That is why the most interesting question is not whether Forever has already fulfilled every Classic+ dream. It is smaller and harder: do you want to see the next bend in the road yourself? The beta offers the first opportunity to find out.

Continue through our Forever era hub for class pages and the developing guide section, or visit the Forever news archive for individual reports. This feature describes the position on September 18, 2026; changing beta details should also be checked against the original sources below.
