Midnight’s next chapter: dark tales and a return to Dornogal
Echoes of the Worldcore takes shape: Talebound rewards, new Lorewalking stories and a return to Dornogal. Explore what the PTR update promises.
Not every WoW evening needs to begin with finding a group and comparing item levels. Midnight’s next update, Echoes of the Worldcore, is also building other reasons to log in: dark fairy tales, journeys through familiar characters’ histories, and collectibles whose appeal lives in your appearance or on a shelf at home.
Blizzard expanded on the content on October 15. Patch 12.1.7 is on the PTR, but the publications checked for this article do not give a live release date. This is a preview with our assessment of the most promising angles, rather than a hands-on review. Official PTR notes
Dornogal becomes a starting point again
The story continues in Return to Dornogal. The next paragraph contains spoilers for the campaign’s opening premise.
Xal’atath has reached the Worldcore, and the way after her runs through Dornogal’s damaged Coreway. Arator, Brinthe, Dagran and Brann help investigate how to open the route. These are the starting conditions of the campaign, rather than a description of its resolution. Blizzard’s overview
Returning to an old city can work well when a familiar place gains a new purpose. The interesting question is whether the changed situation becomes visible in its streets and people, or whether Dornogal mostly provides the next quest marker. Playing the campaign will answer that. For now, a route through a recognizable city gives a concrete point of connection to a conflict about the fate of an entire world.

Talebound promises a different kind of evening
Talebound was introduced in September, and our earlier article covers its basic concept. The useful question now is why you would return to its stories, and what you bring back from them.
It is a distinct PvE mode with action-RPG elements. Slayer, Inquisitor and Witch are classes within Talebound. Movement, dodging and defence are central tools, while visits to Quillgrave between adventures let you improve your prospects for the next attempt. Original Talebound introduction
To us, the appeal is the possibility of learning a different rhythm. Long familiarity with your main character’s rotation may not answer every encounter if timing and positioning work differently. That could make a shared evening appealing to friends whose usual characters are at very different points in their progression. It does not, however, establish access requirements or balance details Blizzard has not announced.
The official trailer below introduces the mood. It is also a useful visual sample of how far this mode wants to step away from an ordinary adventure in Azeroth.

World of Warcraft
Two currencies with different jobs
The new overview distinguishes Bound Silver, used for cosmetic rewards, from Ducats, convertible into resources for progressing through Talebound. Bound Silver is Warband-bound and buys transmog and other collectibles. Official rewards explanation
It is worth keeping those goals separate in your own plans. One evening might improve the chances of a future attempt; another might move you closer to a particular appearance. The preview does not justify promising how many runs a specific purchase will take. A reward image tells you what a goal looks like, rather than how much time it costs.
That is also a useful point to assess your interest. If the movement and combat do not appeal, a mount alone may turn a long collection project into a chore. If the adventures are enjoyable in themselves, the same reward can become a reminder of evenings with friends. The length of a reward list cannot decide which experience you will have.

Lorewalking makes room for the story
New Lorewalking journeys cover Jaina, Thrall, the Titans and Tyr, starting at level 10. You can pause a story. Starting another Lorewalking story before finishing the first resets the unfinished progress. PTR Lorewalking guidance
We see this as an especially approachable part of the update for returning players. WoW has accumulated so much history that a character’s importance is not always obvious from current quest dialogue. A focused journey can provide an anchor without requiring someone to learn the entire timeline at once.
For a player who enjoys lore, our suggestion would be one story per evening. Choose a character whose motives have become unclear and follow the journey without rushing towards the next reward. The Titans and Tyr are particularly interesting subjects for considering what the past might imply about the future. That is a reader’s perspective, rather than a prediction of forthcoming plot developments.

A collector’s calendar and a main character’s progression
Turbulent Timeways starts with the update and lasts eight weeks. The achievement for the Markeet of the Infinite mount requires Mastery of the Timeways in four event weeks. Meanwhile, the Omnium Folio gains two additional Motes and two runes. Update rewards and progression
For collectors, the useful takeaway is to notice a goal spread across several weeks in advance. There is no reason to fill a calendar with guessed dates yet: the event is tied to the update’s release. Once that is confirmed, you can choose four suitable weeks around your own schedule.
The Folio changes deserve a different kind of planning. A new rune is not automatically the best option for every activity, and a short feature preview cannot replace a class-specific comparison. As release approaches, a better question than simply choosing the newest option is what problem each choice solves in the content you actually play.
What is worth looking forward to?
Echoes of the Worldcore’s strongest opportunity is to offer several distinct ways to spend an evening: a campaign on your main, Talebound with a curious friend or Lorewalking at your own pace. The most interesting open question is whether their atmosphere and play will bring people back on their own merits.
The PTR still represents a version that can change. Talebound’s feel, the pace of earning rewards and technical reliability all need practical evidence. Those are the reasons to follow testing and the eventual release schedule closely. The new information already gives this follow-up a clear purpose: Midnight’s next step offers choices for players whose favourite WoW evening is not necessarily marked on a raid calendar.
