Midnight PTR: XP potions, readable books and tree defence
Three Midnight 12.1.7 PTR discoveries together: 30% XP potions, readable decor books and Winter Veil activities. What is known, and what remains open?
What if your next WoW evening revolved around a new character, your own bookshelf or the neighbourhood’s festive tree? Three small but intriguing discoveries from Midnight’s 12.1.7 test build surfaced over the weekend. Together, they offer a glimpse of the update’s lighter side.
This is a PTR roundup: an item or achievement found in the files can still change or disappear. The following is not a guide to obtaining these rewards on live servers.
XP bottles catch the alt player’s eye
Wowhead found four Warband-bound potions described as granting 30% more experience from quests and kills for two hours. Their source is unconfirmed. Names suggest a connection to Talebound’s stories, but treating them as story rewards remains an interpretation. Wowhead’s original discovery.
That number invites thoughts of a new character, but a decisive detail is missing: how much effort would one bottle take to earn? Usage restrictions and interactions with other XP bonuses also need checking before planning a levelling route around them. Four item names do not, by themselves, mean four stackable bonuses.
Bookshelves with something to read

Wowhead’s PTR observations suggest readable decor books for four new Lorewalking stories. Blizzard confirms stories about Jaina, Thrall, the Titans and Tyr, available to characters level 10 and above. Book discovery, Blizzard’s PTR notes.
For a decorator, the appealing idea is a home that also holds memories of an adventure. A book could connect a story you experienced with a place you built yourself. This does not establish that every old book in Azeroth will become decor, or that players will be able to write their own text inside one.
Winter Veil hints at defending the neighbourhood tree
New achievement text mentions neighbourhood Tree Defense: guarding the tree, returning stolen presents and punting attackers. There are also references to carolling and delivering candy cane gifts. These are Wowhead’s findings from the text. Winter Veil discoveries.
A neighbourhood celebration is an appealing opportunity to make a housing area a meeting place. Its success would still depend on practical details, such as whether a small group can comfortably participate and what commitment the rewards demand. Achievement descriptions do not yet answer those questions.
What is worth watching next?
For alt players, the useful next announcement would be a confirmed source for the potions. For decorators, it would be the final book reward list. For neighbours, seeing tree defence in action would tell us more.
Our editorial take is that these three discoveries share an appealing promise: reasons to spend time in Azeroth on your own terms. They do not yet justify rearranging a group’s plans or spending gold in preparation. We will watch which ideas reach the released update.
