Why Forever is not starting with Shaman tanks

Background: a report on Josh Greenfield’s interview explains Forever’s relationship with Season of Discovery. An open future is not a promise.

Memories of Season of Discovery are not enough to plan a Forever character. PC Gamer’s September 16 interview report offers a reason: Josh Greenfield describes a starting point rooted in original class identity. This is background on an earlier interview, not a new announcement today. PC Gamer’s report.

An experiment and a permanent game make different promises

Greenfield reportedly contrasts temporary Season of Discovery experiments with Forever’s starting point. Lessons carry over, but Shaman and Warlock tanks are not part of that opening approach. The future remains open, without a commitment or timetable. PC Gamer cites a GameSpot interview; we have not independently reviewed that video.

Choose a class and a role separately

Illustration. A character’s identity and your preferred group role are not always the same choice.

To us, the useful question is not whether the decision is bold or cautious. It is more personal: do you want to play a particular class, or perform a particular job in a group? If tanking comes first, choose around a currently supported role. If the shaman fantasy comes first, ask whether you would enjoy that character without the tanking option you hoped for.

Have the same conversation with friends. A group plan should not quietly become a promise of an unconfirmed playstyle. Discovering that mismatch before the first evening is better than discovering it after a long stretch of character progression.

One talent does not establish an entire role

Exploring talent combinations is part of the fun. We would still distinguish a promising experiment, helping in an emergency and consistently filling a group role. One attractive ability does not establish how a character handles different dungeon situations or what the rest of the party can safely rely on.

Our test notes would record what the character actually managed, at which level and in which build. That keeps an isolated success from quietly becoming a universal class guide.

An open future is not a launch promise

We would not choose a main character on the assumption that a desired role will arrive later. A better starting point is a character you want to play on the information available today. A future change would then be a welcome addition, not a condition that the whole plan depends on.

Our Forever class pages let you explore the current options. The Forever feature puts those choices into the wider design picture.
