Forever’s secrets: when a strange book starts an adventure

Hidden item information and a Dalaran book puzzle change the experience of discovery. Includes spoiler-free discussion and an optional solution section.

A book left on a table can be a more interesting discovery than a treasure chest marked on a map. First, the player has to decide whether it matters. A Dalaran mystery reported from the Forever beta offers a small example of the pleasure of discovery that can be brought back to familiar Azeroth.

The game is also trying to preserve some information until somebody actually uncovers it. Secrets consequently involve more than hidden objects: the community’s methods of searching, documenting and sharing solutions affect the experience left for everyone else.

Spoilers: the opening sections discuss discovery and item information without revealing the puzzle’s solution. An optional, clearly marked solution appears in the final section. You can stop before it.

When the database cannot answer everything in advance

Icy Veins’ September 28 analysis identified more than 12,500 items whose stats were withheld from player data. Discovery then makes information available to other players. That figure describes the analysis snapshot, not today’s remaining mysteries. Nor does every record represent a new item that will appear in Forever: the data also includes Season of Discovery material. Icy Veins’ analysis.

For a player, the difference is largely one of expectations. A known reward lets you plan an expedition by calculating its value. An unknown reward calls for another reason to leave town: curiosity, a story, a friend’s observation, or the desire to understand why a place looks unusual.

This does not mean everyone should avoid guides. A shared mystery can be enjoyable precisely because one person notices something and another connects it with a detail elsewhere. The solution emerges through conversation. What matters is whether players get to choose between participating in that search and following an established route.

A useful clue points the way

Within a group, it helps to distinguish three ways of sharing a discovery. An observation reports something unusual in a room. A clue connects it with another place. A solution explains the action and its outcome. Putting all three into one chat message removes the reader’s choice after the first sentence.

A practical approach is to ask whether someone wants the general area, the next step or the complete reward. A screenshot can show an object’s location without exposing the final dialogue. A video title need not reveal the last opponent’s name when the intended experience is searching for clues together.

This is our suggestion for cooperative play, rather than a rule imposed by Blizzard. A guild can happily agree to solve everything as efficiently as possible. The useful part is agreeing before somebody accidentally reveals a surprise another player was looking forward to.

    Report discoveries precisely

A beta makes careful observation especially useful. Recording the date, the character’s situation and the action taken helps separate a repeatable observation from a guess. If a door opened immediately after an item was used, that is an observation. Claiming the same door always requires that particular item needs more evidence.

An unsuccessful attempt can also be useful when described accurately. “We could not activate the object during this visit” leaves room for a missing prerequisite. “The object does not work” rules that possibility out without justification. Precise descriptions let the community investigate together without turning the first guess into a permanent instruction.

Spoiler section: one reported beta solution

Stop here if you want to investigate independently. The following route reveals locations, item use and the encounter’s name. It follows Warcraft Tavern’s October 9 report, rather than our own playtest; beta changes may affect the sequence.

    1. Collect the Black Tome in Shadowfang Keep’s back room after Arugal.
    2. Use it beside the blue Leyline Focus in Ambermill’s town hall to obtain the Tome of Dalaran.
    3. Find the small room with a summoning circle beyond Atrexis the Grave Knight in City of Dalaran’s Underbelly. Use the tome; the report identifies the summoned opponent as Lyn the Ignored.

Warcraft Tavern’s illustrated solution helps identify the locations. The appealing part is the connection: a book collected in one dungeon finds a purpose elsewhere in the world. It also gives the next unusual object a reason to remain in your bags for a little longer.
