Mount Hyjal raid notes
Hyjal Summit / Battle for Mount Hyjal: wave structure, trash priorities and five bosses through Archimonde.
How to use this during raid
Hyjal is mostly about wave control and short boss checks. Start with trash priorities, then review each boss' wipe mechanic: Icebolt, Infernal, Mark, Doom or Archimonde's personal survival checks.
Most of the raid feels calm until someone dies on Archimonde and the pull starts falling apart through Soul Charge chains.
Raid rhythm
Mount Hyjal is built around four base-defense sections and the final Archimonde encounter. Each of the first four bosses is preceded by eight trash waves. The first two bosses are fought in the Alliance camp, the next two in the Horde camp, and Archimonde has his own area.

Trash waves
Hyjal trash is not just something on the way to the boss; it is the raid's tempo. Wipes often happen because tanks do not collect the next wave in time, casters are not interrupted or the raid spends too much mana before the boss.
| Responsibility | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tanks | Gather abominations, ghouls and large melee adds quickly. | NPCs and healers must not become the first targets. |
| Interrupts | Silence necromancers, banshees and other casters or pull them into the raid. | A controlled stack is always easier than casters scattered around the field. |
| Ranged | Kill gargoyles and distant adds quickly. | They slow wave cleanup and drain healer mana. |
| Healers | Save mana for the boss, but do not let tanks dip at the start of waves. | The boss comes soon after the final wave. |
Pre/Post-nerf in brief
Mount Hyjal's documented TBC-era changes do not form one clean pre/post-nerf table. The core tactic stays the same: wave control, the boss-specific danger mechanic and personal survival on Archimonde.
| Point | Documented change | Raid impact |
|---|---|---|
| Patch 2.0.3 | Battle for Mount Hyjal was added to the game. | The encounters are original TBC raid content, even though practical access required progression. |
| Patch 2.4.0 | Scale of the Sands reputation gains were increased and Archimonde's Grip of the Legion no longer targeted pets. | The core tactic does not change, but decurse pressure lands more clearly on players. |
| Hotfix 14 May 2008 | Archimonde's Doomfire could no longer move directly through the boss after spawning. | Doomfire still needs to be dodged and placed calmly. |
Encounter 1 / 5 · Mount Hyjal
Rage Winterchill
First boss: move from the floor, save the Icebolt target
Raid priorities
- The Icebolt target can die within a few seconds.
- Death and Decay is a dangerous percentage-based ground effect: move instantly.
- Frost Nova is dispelled especially when it overlaps Death and Decay.
Before the pull
- Assign healers to watch the Icebolt target.
- Remind players to use trinket, Blink, bubble or similar tools if they can save an Icebolt.
- Keep the boss away from Jaina and the NPC risk area.
Mechanics reference
Phase plan and tactic
The tank picks up the boss and the raid spreads while staying in healer range.
Dodge Death and Decay, dispel roots and react to Icebolt.
Keep the same calm rhythm. The fight has no complicated phase transition.
Role notes
Tank
- Keep the boss in healer line of sight and move from ground effects.
DPS
- Do not stand in Death and Decay for one extra cast.
Healers
- Icebolt target first, tank immediately after.
Dispels
- Remove Frost Nova from players who cannot leave the ground effect.
Nerfs: what changed
- Rage Winterchill's core tactic does not rely on a specific TBC nerf. Player reaction to Icebolt and Death and Decay decides the fight.
Encounter 2 / 5 · Mount Hyjal
Anetheron
Infernal away from the raid, Carrion Swarm away from healers
Raid priorities
- Infernal tank has a dedicated position and dedicated healers.
- Carrion Swarm reduces healing done by targets it hits, so healers spread.
- Sleep can disable the wrong players at a bad time and cannot be removed by normal dispel.
Before the pull
- Assign the infernal tank and healers.
- Decide where the infernal is dragged away from the raid.
- Keep healers spread so the same Carrion Swarm does not hit several at once.
Mechanics reference
Phase plan and tactic
The tank places the boss steadily and the raid spreads while staying in healer range.
When the infernal lands, the off-tank builds threat manually and moves it to the assigned spot. DPS kills it or keeps it controlled depending on the raid plan.
Keep Swarm, Sleep and infernals under control. The fight should not become blind play from the healers' point of view.
Role notes
Boss tank
- Keep the boss stable and give the infernal tank room.
Infernal tank
- Pick up the add immediately with active threat and move it away from others.
DPS
- Swap to the infernal according to the raid plan.
Healers
- Spread for Swarms and keep the infernal tank in sight.
Nerfs: what changed
- Anetheron's difficulty comes from positioning and infernal responsibility. Documented patch history does not change the core tactic.
Encounter 3 / 5 · Mount Hyjal
Kaz'rogal
Mana is a mechanic, not just a resource
Raid priorities
- Mana users must not explode in the middle of the raid.
- Mana potions, runes and sensible casting are part of the tactic.
- The fight needs to die before Mark makes resources unmanageable.
Before the pull
- Remind casters and healers to bring mana consumables.
- Decide where low-mana players move if an explosion is likely.
- Assign Bloodlust/Heroism for the burn if raid damage needs it.
Mechanics reference
Phase plan and tactic
The tank positions the boss, melee stays behind and ranged/healers spread.
Casters and healers watch the debuff and their own mana. If an explosion is likely, move away from others.
Use cooldowns before the mana situation forces healers and casters out of the fight.
Role notes
Tank
- Keep the boss turned away from the raid.
Caster DPS
- Use mana tools early, not at zero.
Healers
- Mana is the fight timer. Cut unnecessary overhealing.
Raid lead
- Call the burn before Marks get out of hand.
Nerfs: what changed
- Kaz'rogal's checklist stays the same: Mark turns mana into a raid mechanic. Gear helps, but explosion placement decides wipe risk.
Encounter 4 / 5 · Mount Hyjal
Azgalor
Doom turns a player into an add unless the process is agreed
Raid priorities
- The Doom target must not die in the middle of the raid.
- Rain of Fire is dodged immediately.
- The tank cannot be left without pre-healing during silence.
Before the pull
- Assign the Doomguard tank and position.
- Agree on the Doom target's route.
- Agree on a soulstone rotation if the raid uses it for Doom targets.
- Healers prepare for silence windows with HoTs and cooldown planning.
Mechanics reference
Phase plan and tactic
The boss is tanked steadily. The raid stands so the Doom target can reach the add position quickly.
The target moves away from the raid. The Doomguard tank picks up the spawn and DPS cleans it up according to the plan.
Healers prepare for tank damage before the silence. The tank uses a cooldown if the healing window looks weak.
Role notes
Boss tank
- Prepare for silence and keep the boss away from the raid.
Doom target
- Run to the assigned spot immediately, not at the last second.
Doomguard tank
- Pick up the add and keep it controlled until the boss dies.
Healers
- HoTs and pre-healing before silence.
Nerfs: what changed
- On Azgalor, the most important practical check is the Doom process. If that is agreed, the fight is much calmer.
Encounter 5 / 5 · Mount Hyjal
Archimonde
One death can become the whole raid's death
Raid priorities
- Tears of the Goddess is used at the right time to prevent fall damage.
- Doomfire is kited calmly away from others.
- Grip of the Legion is decursed quickly.
- Fear answers are assigned because fear into Doomfire is the classic wipe.
- One unnecessary death can start a Soul Charge chain.
Before the pull
- Everyone gets Tears of the Goddess from Tyrande and checks the keybind.
- Assign the decurse team for Grip of the Legion.
- Assign fear answers: Tremor, Fear Ward, Berserker Rage, trinkets and other tools.
- Remind Doomfire targets to move sideways, not through the raid.
Mechanics reference
Phase plan and tactic
The tank picks up Archimonde, the raid spreads and keeps decurse/heal range.
Doomfire away from the raid, curse removed immediately, fear answers ready and Air Burst targets use Tears.
Do not turn the end into burn panic. Archimonde dies when players stay alive.
Role notes
Tank
- Keep the boss stable and avoid Doomfire chaos.
DPS
- Stay alive first. Air Burst, Doomfire and fear come before one more damage cast.
Healers
- Keeping decurse/heal range matters more than standing still.
Decurse/Fear
- Remove Grip immediately and keep fear answers active for the whole fight.
Nerfs: what changed
- Patch 2.4.0 changed Hyjal reputation gains and stopped Grip of the Legion from targeting pets, but Archimonde's core rhythm stays the same.
- The 14 May 2008 hotfix fixed Doomfire movement after spawn. It still cannot be ignored: a bad Doomfire line and a player death remain the biggest wipe causes.
