Blackmaw Hold: what waits beyond Azshara’s sealed gate?
Blackmaw Hold invites comparisons with BRD. Explore what the developers have said about its scale, inhabitants and the first expedition.
Azshara’s old sealed gate is exactly the sort of place behind which a WoW player could imagine an entire world. Blackmaw Hold gives that curiosity a destination. Its most intriguing promise is a large, inhabited space where the party needs to look around before it understands how to proceed.
Blizzard released the third Forever podcast episode on October 8. Its Blackmaw segment begins around 39:07, and Icy Veins has published excerpts from the developers’ discussion. Together, they introduce an endgame expedition whose scale invites comparisons with Blackrock Depths. Official podcast announcement.
A place before it becomes a route
In the developer comments reproduced by Icy Veins, Blackmaw has a footprint potentially slightly larger than BRD, with branching routes and verticality. It is intended to be completed in one long session, though not necessarily with every quest finished. Corrupted furbolgs and demons inhabit a space designed as their environment before it becomes a player’s route. Icy Veins’ report and developer excerpts.
That final thought is especially interesting. When a dungeon first resembles somebody’s home or stronghold, players can infer things from its layout. Where are supplies carried? Why are guards positioned on this bridge? Who uses the balcony the party cannot yet reach? These are examples of questions to ask an environment, rather than promises about individual Blackmaw rooms.
This kind of structure can make navigation a shared activity. One player notices a side path, another recognises an earlier landmark, and a third remembers where the descending stairs were. The party learns the place together. A return visit can feel satisfying before the first item drops because an initially confusing environment is becoming familiar.

The BRD comparison describes scale, not a stopwatch
The name Blackrock Depths carries a powerful promise. For many players, it recalls getting lost on a first visit and developing personal knowledge of the routes on later trips. The comparison does not establish Blackmaw’s boss count, exact completion time or how easily a group will find its objectives.
Area is only one ingredient. A huge open space can take little time to cross. A short corridor can take considerable time when its fights require preparation. Verticality can provide memorable views, confusing navigation, or both. Those differences need to be assessed in the finished dungeon.
Leave room to learn on a first expedition. If every pause counts as a failure, a large dungeon can become a burden before its appeal has a chance to emerge. Limited playing time is also a real constraint. Agreeing on a finishing time helps the group make decisions early and respects the person whose next morning begins before everyone else’s.
Keep Blackmaw and Timbermaw distinct
Blizzard’s dungeon preview places Blackmaw Hold at levels 55–60. Its Azshara entrance is associated with the old gate area carrying the Timbermaw name, but Blackmaw’s corrupted tribe should be distinguished from the friendly Timbermaw Hold in Felwood. Similar names do not make them the same community. Blizzard’s dungeon preview and Warcraft Tavern’s location and background report.
Keeping the names separate also makes the story more interesting. A furbolg’s appearance alone cannot explain the goals of their community. A new hostile group in familiar scenery invites questions about what happened to those particular inhabitants. The published premise does not yet justify identifying the ultimate cause of their corruption or inventing a hidden final antagonist.
Who should come on the first expedition?
Our recommendation for a first visit is a party willing to explore. Agree beforehand whether you want to see as much as possible or reach a particular stopping point. Otherwise, investigating a side door can feel like an adventure to one person and a waste of shared time to another.
Three small habits can help: tell the group before following a side path, remember distinctive landmarks, and discuss resources before starting the next fight. These are general expedition suggestions, rather than an unpublished Blackmaw strategy.

The strongest moment of a first visit may be the whole group stopping to look at a space far below and wondering how to reach it.
