Forever reworks Hardcore · what survives a character’s death?
Hardcore’s next journey may offer more than another climb to 60. We separate reported Legacy and character-transfer plans from the questions still open.
Death ends a Hardcore attempt. The interesting question is whether it must also end every reason to care about that particular character. Forever’s plans appear to leave room both for another attempt and for the old character’s story to continue.
Hardcore is not a launch-day feature
Blizzard’s roadmap puts Forever’s launch on November 4. Hardcore follows later, without a specific date in that schedule.
We would therefore avoid booking a Hardcore group’s first session for Forever’s launch day. A waiting group has a separate choice to make: explore the world with ordinary characters first, or preserve the surprises for a one-life attempt. Neither approach is wrong, but they promise different first journeys.
Legacy gives the next attempt a connection to the last
According to Justin Olivetti’s MassivelyOP panel report, Legacy points unlock perk choices for another attempt, with Hardcore-specific challenges. A dead character could move to PvE, PvP or roleplay realms, taking earned Legacy points along. These are reported panel details, not final rules independently checked here.

To us, this offers a useful distinction between losing a challenge and losing a character you have grown attached to. Continuing that character’s story elsewhere would not mean completing Hardcore. Meanwhile, trying again could remain appealing if the previous journey leaves something beyond a screenshot of its final moment.
The balance question we would watch is how much advantage an established player gains. Interesting choices would be a better goal than making a first attempt feel deliberately underpowered. A system’s name cannot settle that question. We need to see actual perks, limits and interactions before judging the result.
Safety is not an unlimited promise
The report also discusses protection from unfair situations. We do not consider that evidence that every disconnect death will be prevented. A possible Mak’gora space remains a tease. Panel report.
The useful follow-up questions concern when protection activates, whether it works in combat, and how it handles server problems versus a player’s own connection. We would not build a risky playstyle around that feature before its conditions are clear.
Our Deep Dive coverage explains the wider systems. New discoveries and dangers also connect to Forever’s quest design. Ultimately, we would judge Hardcore’s changes by a straightforward test: does another attempt feel like an adventure worth choosing, or an obligation to replace what was lost?
