Disappearing opponents? Forever players question layer changes

Players describe encounters and conversations being cut short. Beta feedback raises a simple question: does the shared world stay together?

An opponent is in sight. A moment later, they are gone, and the encounter seems to have no ending. The situation players describe touches a basic expectation of open-world PvP: the same fight should still exist a few steps away.

What have players reported?

In a beta forum discussion, Ohmandy's September 18 post describes repeated world-refresh warnings. Replies the next day also describe interrupted general chat and opponents appearing or disappearing around zone boundaries.

These are player reports, not a verified technical diagnosis. We have not reproduced the situations ourselves. The five posts we reviewed contain no Blizzard reply, so they do not establish how widespread the issue is, its precise cause or a repair schedule.

Why might this feel bigger than an ordinary beta bug?

An illustration of shared-world continuity, not documentation of an observed game bug.

For us, the important question is continuity. In PvP, a player makes decisions based on what they can see: chase, retreat or wait for a friend? If a target disappears mid-encounter, it becomes hard to understand which decision determined the outcome.

The same concern applies to quieter play. A conversation with a stranger, helping with a quest or recognising a familiar name are small moments that build a sense of community. Losing them can matter more to a player than the technical name of the system underneath.

That is our assessment of why the feedback matters. One discussion cannot establish that everyone has the same experience, and the current beta is not a verdict on the finished game.

Layer, phase or connection issue? Disappearance alone is not a diagnosis

Players use terms such as layering, sharding and phasing, but they are not interchangeable. We use layer changes here as a broad description of the reports, not as a claim about Forever's internal implementation.

A useful follow-up test would separate at least three situations: do visible players change while someone stands still, only at a zone boundary, or alongside another event? It also matters whether a target vanishes during active combat or after it ends.

Without that distinction, different problems can become one discussion. We would not automatically call boundary movement intentional abuse, either: someone's intent cannot be read from the disappearance alone.

What would useful feedback look like?

If something similar happens to you, we would suggest noting:

  1. The beta build, zone, time and selected ruleset.
  2. Whether combat was active and anyone had just crossed a zone boundary.
  3. What you saw before and after the disappearance, and whether the other player saw the same thing.
  4. Whether the same steps reproduce it. Hide private conversations in screenshots or video.

These are our suggested observations, not a new reporting procedure announced by Blizzard. A precise account helps distinguish an isolated interruption from a repeatable situation.

In our view, the central request need not be a world without layers. It is that an encounter already in progress should reach an understandable ending. We will watch for a developer response to these reports. Other currently acknowledged beta issues are distinguished from player reports in our in-depth Forever overview.
