What does Forever leave for Retail? Ion wants a livelier world in both
Ion Hazzikostas’s interview raises WoW’s difficult balancing act: keeping play convenient while leaving room for adventure and new friendships.
Forever’s announcement raises a question for players staying in Retail: are a lively world and stronger communities becoming features of a separate game, or can they grow in modern WoW too?
In Windows Central’s September 18 interview, Ion Hazzikostas rejects treating an engaging outdoor world as something only Classic players should want. He mentions the Heroic World Tier experiment as a possible model for The Last Titan. That is an ambition, not a confirmed difficulty setting or release schedule.
Convenience and connection are different achievements
In our view, this is a difficult tension for a modern online game. Remove every pause, question and shared preparation, and some opportunities to talk disappear too. Make every activity require coordinating several schedules, and a short evening may stop working altogether.
That is why a simple demand to go back to the past is not enough. A useful comparison asks which obstacles create meaningful choices and which merely consume time. Finding a companion for a journey and fighting an interface are not the same experience.
The outdoor world needs more than harder hits

The interview does not provide a finished system to test. For us, the interesting next question is where that outdoor excitement would come from.
A larger enemy health bar does not, on its own, make a road worth exploring. We would like situations where choosing a route, watching the surroundings or helping another player matters. A relaxed questing evening still needs room to exist. Those are our hopes, not a Blizzard feature list.
Three branches, one group of friends
Hazzikostas describes Forever as a third pillar alongside Retail and Classic and acknowledges fragmentation risks. Preserving Horde and Alliance identity is also an intention, not an announcement of another faction war.
For a player, fragmentation is more practical than a product name. Who is coming on Thursday? Which characters will receive the group’s shared time? If friends want three different experiences, the sheer amount of content is not the whole answer.
We do not read the interview as a promise of shared matchmaking or progression between versions. Instead, we want each branch to make its intended kind of evening easy to understand.
Direction is not an implementation plan
What the interview establishes is a direction: Hazzikostas wants Retail’s social experience to improve too. A new game is not presented as a reason to abandon the existing one’s shortcomings.
Implementation, rewards and how different players find enjoyable activities remain open questions. We would not name a winner yet or infer that a current mode is being removed.
A good adventure leaves something behind
We do not think completion speed is the only useful measure. A memorable rescue, a familiar name or a reason to set out together again can matter just as much.
Our large Forever overview covers the new game’s plans. The value of this interview lies in another question: can excitement about a new Azeroth help make the current one better?
