Forever's claimed XP reduction was wrong · Wowhead retracts its report

Wowhead has retracted its claim about reduced XP requirements in Forever. Level thresholds and the time needed to level are different questions.

A claim about a faster trip to level 60 sparked discussion, but the evidence behind it did not hold up. The important news here is not a new number: it is that the reported number did not describe the data the game actually uses.

    What did Wowhead correct?

Wowhead's retraction says Forever's XP requirements match Classic. The original claim used an inactive data file. The publisher says contact from Blizzard helped clarify the mistake.

This is a report about Wowhead correcting its own article. We had not published the reduced-requirements claim as a news story ourselves.

An XP threshold is not a stopwatch

    Three questions need separating:

    • How much experience is required for the next level?
    • How much does an individual quest or enemy award?
    • How long does earning that experience take?

The first number cannot answer the other two by itself. Imagine two quest routes: one involves a long walk, while the other ends beside the quest giver. An identical XP threshold would not make their duration identical. That is an illustrative example, not a measurement from the Forever beta.

The correction therefore should not become a new claim that every aspect of leveling is unchanged.

Why a data file needs context

From an editorial perspective, this is a useful reminder that finding data and identifying the active system are different jobs. A table can be read accurately while the conclusion drawn from it is wrong. The game version, the file's role and observed behavior determine what the number actually supports.

For readers, a useful check is to revisit the source's current headline and correction notice. An old screenshot or discussion opener cannot update itself when the underlying story changes.

What should players do with the correction?

We would not plan time off or an entire character route around a single datamined table. To judge your own likely pace, look for documented tests performed under comparable conditions and keep the beta version in view.

It is possible to debate the game's direction without turning a correction into a claim about a writer's motives. Our larger Forever guide provides the broader sourced picture.

    Source and scope

This story covers Wowhead's own correction. Contact from Blizzard is attributed to the publisher, not presented as a separately reviewed Blizzard statement. Checked September 22, 2026. The banner is illustrative.
