How to read these guides

Each guide covers five skill brackets: 1-75, 75-150, 150-225, 225-300 and 300-375. Crafting guides outline materials and recipe choices; gathering guides cover suitable areas and skill requirements. These are progression overviews, not complete shopping lists. Check recipe requirements and your realm's prices before buying materials.

1-75 Apprentice
Start with inexpensive Light Leather recipes, including armor kits.
  • Skinning naturally supplies materials while leveling.
  • Check the next recipe's requirements before converting all your leather into other materials.
75-150 Journeyman
Medium leather, cured hide and early armor crafts move you forward.
  • Curing hides may require supplies from a vendor.
  • Watch the medium/heavy leather transition because the price can jump.
150-225 Expert
Heavy and thick leather define the middle stage.
  • This is where armor kits and gear crafts are worth comparing.
  • If you intend to specialize, check how that choice affects your later crafting goals.
225-300 Artisan
Thick and rugged leather take you to the Classic cap.
  • Rugged Leather can be expensive to buy; skinning higher-level beasts is an alternative.
  • Save useful kits and gear crafts for alts.
300-375 Master / Outland
Use Knothide Leather, Heavy Knothide Leather and specialty scales for the Outland stage.
  • Drums, leg armor and Riding Crop make the profession useful after the skill cap too.
  • 350+ can require valuable special leathers or reputation recipes.

Practical tips

  • Pair with Skinning if you want to gather your leather rather than buy it all at the auction house.
  • Because of drums, the profession's value is not just your own gear.
  • Special scales can be a bottleneck, so do not panic-buy them at the final stretch.
