Onyxia tactics

Three-phase Classic-guide: building the threat, Deep Breath and whelps of the flight phase and controlled descent to the fear phase.

Read the steps before the pull

Onyxia's individual abilities are clear, but the trades for takeoff and landing pose the greatest risk. Read the TL;DR first, then the placement of each step and the responsibilities of your role.

This guide is for the level 60 Classic version. The Wrath version and the Season of Mastery / Discovery changes are different encounters.

One boss, three different stages

Onyxia's Lair is a single boss 40-player raid. The first phase measures threat discipline and positioning, the flight phase measures whelp control and Deep Breath reaction, and the last phase measures the tank's fear control without the dragon turning on the raid.

For raid lead: Mark the northern tank point, split the raid into east and west sides, name the whelp tanks and AoE groups and repeat the Deep Breath safe zones before the pull.

Onyxia Vanilla change history

Onyx changed several times before 1.12 mode. Some of the changes were balance, some were clear bug fixes. Classic Era and Anniversary use the established level 60 version without the broken intermediates of the original patches.

TimeDocumented changeEffect
Patch 1.3Fireball's confuse/DoT removed and on-hit damage increased; egg pit warmed up in Deep Breath; flight phase combat-reset fixed. The flight phase became more predictable, but the fireball's direct hit became harder.
Hotfix 3/16/2005Fixed a bug that caused consecutive knockback spam.Tank's threat could no longer collapse into a bug chain.
Patch 1.5Tail Sweep's missing knockback restored.Standing behind the Whelp caves was dangerous again.
Hotfix 6/28/2005Onyxia's HP was increased to offset the bugfix that increased caster DPS.The change was a compensatory buff, not a nerf.
Patch 1.7Point-to-point teleporting in the flight phase was removed and confuse evasion was fixed. The trajectory became clear and the old cheese was removed.
Hotfix 3/31/2006Patch 1.10 accidentally increased Deep Breath frequency restored. It was a bug fix, not a planned nerf.

In the Classic 1.12 guide, Deep Breath is treated as a random flight path selection; raid stacking or DPS speed won't reliably trigger it.

Onyxia

Encounter 1 / 1 · Onyxia's Lair

Onyxia

Three phase black dragon: ground, flight and fear end phase.

2 tanksFire resistanceWhelp control
TL;DR: Tank Onyx on the north wall and keep the raid on the sides — never in front or behind the tail. In the flight phase, spread out, group up whelps in AoE and immediately move from the Deep Breath line to the adjacent side. DPS off before landing, let the tank rebuild threat, and control Bellowing Roar without Onyxia flipping.

Raid priorities

  • The tank holds Onyxia's head to the north; the rest of the raid only stands at the sides and not at the mouth of the egg pit.
  • Deep Breath emote reacts according to location: away from the room diameter line crossed by Onyxia.
  • On landing, the DPS stops until the main tank has regained position and threat.
  • Only the tank uses fear immunity in a controlled manner; the rest of the raid doesn't pull Onyxia away from the fear group.
Before the pull
  • Clear the entrance tunnel and move into the room as a group for the Warder respawn.
  • Mark the tank point on the north wall and the raid spots on the east and west sides.
  • Name the whelp tanks, AoE groups, and the player calling the Onyxia's flight location.
  • Agree is the tank's Berserker Rage / fear Ward rhythm to phase three.
Mechanics reference
Flame Breath and Cleave
Frontal strong hits will only hit the tank if the boss stays facing north.
Knock Away
Tank knockback reduces threat; DPS must leave sufficient margin throughout the first phase.
Tail Sweep
The rear cone throws players to the sides and can push them into whelp eggs.
Fireball
The target in the flight phase and nearby players take Fire damage, so the raid spreads.
Deep Breath
Onyx flies across the room and burns a wide straight line. Security can be found on both sides of the line, not just at the edge of the room.
Onyxia Whelps
A large wave rises at the beginning of the flight phase and smaller waves later; they get tanked and AoE killed.
Bellowing Roar
Phase 3 raid fear can turn the tank and the rest of the raid in different directions; floor cracks erupt with fear.
Phase plan and tactic
Step 1 — 100-65%
Main tank runs past Onyxia to the north wall. The raid splits to the flanks and waits for the threat. DPS is kept in check due to Knock Away; the front and back cones are left completely empty.
Stage 2 — 65-40%
Onyx rises through the south. Off-tanks assemble the first wave of whelp and AoE kills it in a controlled manner. Ranged damages Onyxia from a loose formation and everyone after the Deep Breath emotes move out of her line of flight.
Landing
Casters stop damage well before 40 percent. The main tank builds rage from the whelps, fetches Onyxia to the north and only then calls the DPS to continue.
Step 3 — 40-0%
Repeat the side placement of the first step. The tank anticipates fear's screen vibration and uses the agreed fear-immunity; raid doesn't break fear randomly. Avoid the floor eruptions and kill the remaining whelps.
Role notes

Tanks

  • The main tank keeps its head north and builds a large threat front.
  • Off tanks collect flight phase whelps; in landing, another tank ensures the direction of Onyxia.

Melee DPS

  • Stand on the side between the front foot and the back foot, not in line with the head or tail.
  • Help the whelps during the flight phase and wait for the tank call after landing.

Ranged DPS

  • Spread out for a fireball splash and follow the flight position of Onyxia.
  • Use DoT and ranged damage during the flight phase, but stop in time before landing.

Healers

  • Stay in flank groups and leave the whelp tanks with their own healers.
  • Be prepared for the tank's momentary heal break during fear and fireball spikes during the flight phase.

raid utility

  • Hunter can track a Dragonkin target and assist in flight position calling.
  • Warrior tank beats Berserker Rage; fear Ward and Tremor are matched so that the wrong player is not the only one out of fear.

Nerfs: what changed

  • The biggest real pre/post difference is patch 1.3: the fireball's confuse/DoT was removed, the direct hit was increased and the flight phase combat and egg pit actions were fixed.
  • Patch 1.5 restored Tail Sweep's knockback; the safe place is therefore not directly behind the tail.
  • Patch 1.7 removed point teleports in Onyxia's flight phase and closed confuse-cheese.
  • Patch 1.10's Deep Breath spam was an unintentional bug and was hotfixed; it is not treated as a more difficult official version.
  • Season of Mastery's drakes and Warders in the flight phase and Season of Discovery's level 60 changes is excluded.
